About Us

Christopher Piper Wines started out life in 1979, based in a bungalow in Clyst Honiton, at the end of Exeter Airport’s only runway (at the time). Chris Piper was soon joined by John Earle, in 1980, with whom he had been friends at school and university. The company moved to Silver Street, Ottery St. Mary, where its offices and shop still are today. Christopher Piper Wines was set up to supply the West Country's restaurants and hotels and 35 years on, this is still very much the company’s principal activity.

Over the years, the company has evolved from being a wine merchant into a major importer and stockholder, concentrating on on-trade wholesale supply. Wines are sourced directly from growers and producers across the wine world and are shipped in to purpose-built warehouses in Ottery St. Mary.

A Family Team

Today, John Earle is Managing and Financial Director whilst Chris Piper is Chairman and Director in charge of Sales. The company comprises of a team of eighteen people, split between Sales, Admin and Logistics, nearly all of whom are based in the East Devon town of Ottery St. Mary. Most of ‘the Team’ has worked for CPW for many years and our philosophy is that we are there to support each other, through thick or thin.

A West Country Wine Merchant

Since we started out in business, in the late 1970’s, it has always been our belief that we should concentrate on supplying wines throughout the West Country. It is an area we love, respect and know well. To that end, we endeavour to look after on-trade customers and deliver to them, using or own fleet of vans, throughout the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. We also deliver to the New Forest on a weekly basis.

From Vine To Glass

Uniquely, Christopher Piper Wines is involved in every aspect of the wine trade; from the growing of vines, to wine making, shipping, importing and distribution. It would certainly be difficult to find another wine company in the UK who has such a wealth of experience, in so many fields, over so many years.

Our Unique Heritage

Christopher Piper Wines came about, in the late 1970’s, when Chris Piper decided to sell the wines, in the UK, that he had been making in Beaujolais’ Brouilly region. As a qualified oenologist (wine maker) and through his contacts across the wine-making world, Chris’ experience has been instrumental in making CPW such a respected wine wholesaler and importer. Today, he continues his work in the Beaujolais region, working as a hands-on wine maker for Château de Grandmont (Blacé) and Château du Pavé (St. Lager). Chris has successfully completed the conversion of Château du Pavé to organic farming and wine-making. He also consults for other estates in the region.
