Our Environmental and Charitable Policies

Christopher Piper Wines has been working for a number of years to develop a clear and sustainable environmental policy. This includes:

All cardboard and wooden cases that make up our outer packaging are re-used wherever possible. We encourage customers to return this packaging on our delivery vans, so that is can be re-used by our warehouse team. In our offices, all paper and card is recycled and shredded, so that it can be used as protection in packaging, avoiding the use of environmentally unfriendly polystyrene. All glass and plastics are also recycled.

Shipping and Deliveries:

All shipments from overseas are carefully planned and groupaged, so as to reduce the amount of ‘shipping miles’ per line. All our products are brought in to our warehouses at Ottery St. Mary, avoiding secondary transport from bonded and other warehouse facilities. Our own deliveries to customers are generally carried out by our own vehicles, using carefully planned itineraries and routes that considerably reduces our delivery mileage.

Energy usage:

Energy is conserved though the use of up-to-date lighting and heating technology in both our offices and warehouses. In the majority of our warehousing, no temperature control is needed as the ambient temperature remains naturally very stable. Where we use air conditioning, this is state-of-the art and highly energy efficient.

Travel and vehicles:

The CPW sales team always drives vehicles that are energy efficient. Where possible, company policy is to encourage employees to use rail travel rather than cars. We keep our air miles to the minimum by using the train wherever possible.

CPW and ‘paper free’ policy:

Wherever possible, we try are trying to move towards a totally paper-free environment. All our offers are made using e-mail or our web site. Although we do print an annual wine list in paper format, we are encouraging customers (potential and exiting) to receive it on a memory stick or download it from our website. We are encouraging our customers to receive their invoices by e-mail and we operate a fully automated e-mail service for statements. Where possible, all payments and receipts are made electronically.

Charitable support in the local Community:

Christopher Piper Wine has had a regular and on-going policy of supporting local charities and institutions. Currently, these include: The Lord Taverners, Bradninch Cricket Club (sponsorship), Exeter Cathedral, numerous local primary schools, The Kings School - Ottery St. Mary, Devon Air Ambulance, Ottery St. Mary Choral Society, ‘The Baton’, Plymtree Country Fayre.
